What therapy supports does the NDIS fund?

The NDIS may fund a number of therapy supports for you to access if they are:
  1. Solely related to your disability needs
  2. Evidence based practice
  3. Meet the NDIS reasonable & necessary guidelines

The type of therapy support you require will be different from person to person and sometimes it may require a bit of trial and error to find the right type of therapy support for YOU/your child, but also the right THERAPIST.

We have included a list below of common therapy supports that are accessed using NDIS funding, however just remember that if you decide to engage with these supports it must be used in line with your NDIS plan - meaning the supports are being used solely for your disability related needs and to work towards the goals outlined in your plan.

Types of therapies that may be covered by NDIS and their costs:
The rate/hr depends on the type of therapy support, and your location. Not sure if you are considered non-remote, remote or very remote?

How is it funded in my plan?
Therapy supports may be funded in one of the following categories (if available in your plan) under your CAPACITY BUILDING BUDGET:
  1. Improved Daily Living (CB Daily Activity)
  2. Improved Health & Wellbeing (CB Health & Wellbeing). Note: you can only access personal training supports if you have this funding category in your plan
  3. Improved Relationships (CB Relationships). Note: you can only access specialist behaviour intervention and behaviour management training if you have this funding category in your plan

What other charges can my therapist charge me for?
It's important to remember that often the work therapists do with you, aren't only provided during your face to face or online appointments. There are other costs associated with each session that your therapist might charge you for - so it is always important to clarify this when signing a service agreement or agreeing to supports. These might include:
  1. Travel costs (to and from your appointment) - if you are not in the clinic
  2. NDIA Report Writing
  3. Non face to face supports - documents & notes, resources, email or phone correspondence
  4. Late/short cancellations

What about therapies that aren't included in the list above?
For more information on the types of therapy supports that the NDIS do NOT fund, or those not listed above - check out our resource: Therapies NOT funded by the NDIS

What if I do not have enough funding for my therapy supports?
If your plan has not included funding for these supports, and you feel this is reasonable & necessary for your disability needs, you will need to get in touch with your NDIA planner or LAC directly, or call NDIA on 1800 800 110 to discuss a plan review or your options for funding.

If requesting funding for additional therapy support hours, it is likely your will be required to submit evidence or documentation in the form of a written report form your therapist to show how these supports meet the NDIS reasonable & necessary guidelines for your disability needs. They will then review these documents to determine if they deem it appropriate to fund.
