What does an NDIS Plan Manager (PM) do?

A Plan Manager is NOT a direct employee of the NDIS, they are independent service providers who assists NDIS participants with paying for their supports and managing their claims. Their primary role is to help participants to manage their budgets and pay for services and supports outlined in their NDIS plan.


PM stands for Plan Management.

What is a plan managers role?

The role of an Plan Manager is support the participant with the financial management of their plan. This includes:

  1. Setting up and managing an NDIS participant's plan budget, including tracking expenses and ensuring funding is allocated appropriately.
  2. Paying invoices for services and supports received by the participant, and managing the financial aspects of their NDIS plan.
  3. Providing advice and information to participants about their funding options and how to maximise the value of their NDIS plan.
  4. Supporting participants to navigate the financial aspects of their plan, including managing provider payments, handling reimbursement claims, and negotiating fees and charges.
  5. Liaising with service providers on behalf of the participant to ensure they are paid correctly and on time.
  6. Providing regular updates and reports to the participant about their budget and spending, and ensuring they have a clear understanding of their financial position.

Overall, the role of an NDIS Support Coordinator is to provide practical assistance and support to NDIS participants, to ensure they are able to access the services and supports they need to achieve their goals and live their best possible life.


What does my plan manager NOT do?

Think of your NDIS Plan Manager as your Financial Manager/Assistance. Your plan manager is NOT a Support Coordinator, LAC or ECIC. The role of a plan manager focuses purely on assisting and supporting you with financial tasks relating to your NDIS funding. This also can include building capacity around managing your budget, so it is important to remember this when engaging with plan management services.

It is NOT the role of your plan manager to:

  1. Connect, organise or schedule your services with other providers
  2. Manage your schedule or appointments
  3. Provide disability related advocacy services
  4. Decide what supports you can or cannot access (unless it’s not included in your plan)
